Oakley Infant School

British Values Statement

 

The Department for Education states that there is a need “to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.

 

At Oakley Infant school these values are reinforced regularly in the following ways.

 

Democracy

 

Children have the opportunity to put themselves forwards and vote for school council representatives in each class. The School Council then plays a key role in making decisions that have an effect on all pupils. They attend weekly meetings with a teacher to discuss the current issues and have to feed back to the rest of the class. This may mean collecting the views of the class in preparation for the next meeting therefore ensuring all children have a voice through the school council. The issues the School Council are involved in may be moral or social issues such as wet playtime activities, the travel plan and lunchtime arrangements. The School Council is always included and involved in the staff selection process, having the opportunity to host any visitors in the school.

 

Rule of Law

 

Our school rules are outlined in the behaviour policy. At the beginning of each school year time is spent in each class discussing the school rules and developing class rules for the safety and benefit of everyone. Each class draws up a Class Charter based on the UN Convention of Children’s Rights and it is displayed in every classroom with each child signing up. The rules and UN rights are regularly revisited through the PSHE Curriculum, lessons, assemblies and class circle times. Children are encouraged to take responsibility for their own behaviour; with rights come responsibility.

Children are encouraged to keep the Golden Rules in order to take part in Golden Time on a Friday, a failure to keep the Golden Rules will result in less Golden Time.

We ensure children understand that school and class rules are there to protect everyone and are essential for our wellbeing and safety. Elements of the History curriculum also enable children to explore the roles of law and authority in the past, for example through studying the Gunpowder Plot and the Victorians.

 

Individual Liberty

 

We encourage our children to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment to enable them to do this. Through our PSHE lessons we discuss different choices they may make and the consequences of those choices. Children are continually encouraged to make the right choices by all adults working in school and this theme is revisited through a programme of class assemblies and circle times. We encourage independent thinking through our learning attributes and learning tree which encourages the children to reflect on their learning and the choices they have made. The importance of making safe choices when using the Internet is explored regularly through the Computing curriculum and shared with the whole school as part of our annual E-Safety unit of work.

 

Mutual Respect

 

Our whole school ethos is built around mutual respect and the understanding that all pupils have rights and responsibilities and citizens of Oakley Infant School and the wider community. We are an inclusive school where everyone is valued and has a contribution to make to the school. Children learn that their behaviours have an effect on their own rights and those of others through the exploration of the UN Convention of Rights for the Child.

Children are encouraged to respect each other throughout the day, including lunchtimes, when good behaviour can be recorded by lunchtime staff to help their class achieve a weekly lunchtime certificate. Through the class charters children are encouraged to respect other’s rights.

 

Tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.

 

Assemblies are planned to give children the opportunity to reflect on a variety of beliefs, cultures and moral values. The RE curriculum is planned carefully to allow opportunities for discussion about people’s diverse and different beliefs. Through this work the children are equipped with the knowledge that will enable them to understand and be tolerant of peoples’ belief systems. All children are encouraged to get involved in fundraising opportunities for a school in Ghana and understand the children’s different needs. Through the SEAL assembly themes children are taught how to respect by talking about how actions and words can affect others.

We help them to understand, accept, respect and celebrate diversity.
